Dr. Forster's journal, August 1776 ...

{enroute, from the Coast of the Carolinas to NY ...}:

"8th August. ... off the Virginia Capes ...

"... Howe is in possession of Staton Island {sic} ... I hear is a barren sandy spot."
...

"14th August. Nothing remarkable occurred `till our arrival at Staton Island {sic}, We made Sandy Hook Wednesday morning and came to an anchor ... {amidst the transports carrying the German regiments}
...

"... instead of Staten Island being a barren spot, it is A MOST BEAUTIFUL FERTILE PLACE {my emphasis} covered with verdure and cultivated every where ..."
...

"18th August. We ... disembark and encamp ... I pitched my tent in Lord Cornwallis' Division ...
...

"19th August. ... I strouled {sic} into the Hessian Camp, which is pitched in a different manner ... they forming a regular square, we {British pitch our tents in} extended Lines.

"... the whole of this Island is very beautiful, its prospects are very rich, having fine diversity of ground, water and woods ...

"... the most delightful LANDSHIPS were formed by the different Divisions of the Camp -- some being layed out on the water's edge; others at the skirts of high woods; some under large Trees; and the greatest number on the open Plain ~!"
